Passing of Steve Hunt

The Institute regretfully advises the recent passing of Steve Hunt. 'Such a likeable bloke', Steve spent time working in Sri Lanka and Vietnam however his home town was Toowommba where he spent the last year battling with cancer.

Steves funeral will be held on Tuesday 20 December at 12:30pm at Burstows, 1020 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba (on the road to Warwick opposite the Garden and Remembrance Lawn Cemetery.

Pioneering a new approach to biodiversity monitoring

Australian Forestry, Australia’s principal forest science journal, has devoted its next issue (Australian Forestry VOL74, NO4)to a comprehensive review by West Australian forest scientists of the results to date of the FORESTCHECK project.

The FORESTCHECK project of the WA Department of Environment and Copnservation is a continuing retrospective study of the impact of silvicultural treatments (harvesting and associated burning) in the jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest of south-west Western Australia.

Critical Decade - update on contact with Climate Commission

Following the presentation of forestry in the Climate Commissions latest report, the Critical Decade, on 28 June 2011, a Group of 87 forest scientists and practitioners wrote to Will Steffen, the reports lead author, indicating flaws and missed opportunities in the treatment of forests in that report.

IFA Comments on Tasmanian Negotiating Principles

The Institute of Foresters of Australia (IFA) – Tasmanian Division, has considered the signed “Tasmanian Forests Statement of Principles to Lead to an Agreement”. The IFA understand the principles are seen as a starting point for negotiations, and as such provide a basis for final agreement. As Australia’s only representative professional forest management organisation, the IFA is committed to working with all parties to achieve an outcome that strengthens the communities support for forestry, builds a lasting resolution to differences, and supports ongoing forest based industries and communities in Tasmania. As a preliminary position statement we have considered the Principles that we believe we can provide comment on.

ACFA - A Division of the IFA

The Association of  Consulting Foresters of Australia (ACFA) was established in 1978 in response to the need to promote and protect the credibility and competence of Australia's consulting foresters.

Nowadays, both the public and private sectors need access to independent, objective and non-political assessments of current and proposed forest activities which are reliable and have the backing of a recognized professional association.
