Industry Participation in Certification Course Opportunity Friday, 5 September 2008 The National Forestry Masters consortium has announced that it has secured funding from the Australian Government as part of its Asia Pacific Skills and Capacity Building Program.
One component of the capacity building proposal is the delivery of certification training. The course will be conducted in two short courses principally delivered by a team from the Rainforest Alliance with contributions from others and will take place in Deramakot Forest in Sabah, Malaysia in October and November 2008.

One of the recommendations of the summit was to create a work experience program to attract more students to study forestry by providing forestry holiday employment for non-forestry undergraduate students. In particular, employers were seeking a coordinated process to recruit students on behalf of industry. read more... | Jolly Medal - Roger Underwood Monday, 18 August 2008 The IFA President, Dr Peter Volker, has announced that Roger Underwood of Palmyra Western Australia has been awarded the N.W. Jolly Medal. The N.W. Jolly Medal is the Institute of Foresters of Australia’s highest and most prestigious honour for outstanding service to the profession of forestry in Australia.
Roger Underwood worked as a forester in the WA Forests Department for 25 years, moving from forest workman (in his student days) through positions as a Divisional Forest Officer and Regional Superintendent and three years as Research Superintendent before becoming General Manager of WA’s Department of Conservation and Land Management (now DEC) for 9 years.
In making the announcement Dr Volker said “Roger continues to provide leadership in forestry in Australia, setting a shining example of articulate commitment, integrity and professional achievement.” read more... | IFA concerned with PFDC funds withdrawal - letter to Minister Thursday, 14 August 2008 IFA President, Dr Peter Volker RPF FIFA, has registered the concerns of the Institute with the withdrawal of Australian Government funding for Private Forests Development Committees.
