Mitchell Field Trip

Mitchell Field Trip: Vegetation management and markets in Queensland’s South West
New Dates

The Queensland Division of the IFA/AFG would like to invite IFA/AFG members and those interested in Cypress forest management, carbon and environmental offset markets on a two-day field trip to Mitchell and its surrounds. It is a long Queen’s Birthday weekend so get your camping gear out! During the trip, you will receive an overview of the regions Cypress markets and operations provided by local forest officers and mill operators. A series of presentations around carbon markets in the states South West and potential environmental offsets will be tied in with several field visits in the surrounding forests. You will be guided through the principles of Mulga forests and the opportunities for alternate carbon markets.

Day One Program: Saturday 2 October
12:00 pm arrival at Mitchell meeting point
01:00 pm Cypress mill tour and discussion about operation and markets
03:00 pm Cypress forest visit including markets and operation discussions
05:00 pm Emerging markets for foresters in environmental offsets and other areas of the vegetation management framework
06:00 pm Camp oven dinner and campfire ceremony
Day Two Program: Sunday 3 October
06:00 am Camp Breakfast
07:30 am Mulga forest visit and discuss fodder harvesting
09:30 am Brains trust discussion of opportunities for alternate carbon methods to compliment fodder harvesting and silviculture
12:00 pm Wrap-up

Suggested Accommodation: 
Camp for free at 75 Alice Street, powered sites available. Guesthouse with four free beds available on a first-in-first-served basis.

Or check nearby hotel/motel accommodation in Mitchell. 
Meals and food: 
Optional camp oven dinner on Saturday 2 October (price $25) and breakfast on Sunday 3 October (price $10) provided – payment to be made directly to the organisers onsite, cash is preferred.
Other meals are BYO or can be purchased in Mitchell.
Getting there: 
Mitchell is a 6.5-hour drive west of Brisbane. Please check carpooling options if you do not have your own vehicle to drive. 
The nearest airport is Roma where pick-up and drop-off can be arranged.



Field Trip: Araucaria plantation management, fire recovery and tree planting at Jimna

To celebrate the International Day of Forests, the IFA/AFG Queensland Branch would like to invite IFA/AFG members and those interested in plantation management and fire recovery on a field trip to Jimna. During the trip you will receive an overview of the 2019 fire season, visit a fire-affected area and learn how the Jimna Hoop Pine plantations are being re-established. You will then have an opportunity to plant a Hoop Pine tree.  Delegates are required to arrange their own transport to Jimna (accessible on a bitumen road), where morning tea will be provided. A bus will then transport delegates around the tour sites. The trip will involve minimal walking. For those who wish to stay in the area, camping is available nearby at the QPWS Peach.
