WEBINAR

Foresters as family forest owners

Date: Wednesday 8 April
Time: 12.30 pm AEST

Foresters as family forest owners There are many forest scientists and forestry professionals who privately grow their own trees ‘on the side’. Some come from a farming background whilst many others have purchased land specifically to be private forest owners.

They grow trees for many reasons, and often in ways, and using species, that are very different to conventional production forestry. This webinar is designed to share their experience and provide guidance for others interested in growing their own forests for the reasons that are important to them. Starting with some examples we will identify the options, equipment, skills and challenges involved in growing your own and how being a family forest owner is different.

Speaker: Rowan Reid Rowan (B.For.Sci. & M.For.Sci.) is a forester amongst farmers. Rowan has lectured a subject in agroforestry at Melbourne University since 1991 and is now the MD of the Australian Agroforestry Foundation. Rowan won the Australian Eureka Prize for his farmer course (The Australian Master TreeGrower), which he continues to deliver around Australia and internationally. Most importantly, Rowan is also a farmer and tree grower in his own right, with a family farm in the Otway Ranges of southern Victoria and a founder of one of Australia’s most successful Landcare groups, the Otway Agroforestry Network. More than 12,000 visitors have toured his Bambra Agroforestry Farm, which is set up as a 42-hectare outdoor classroom for farmers, scientists, students and tree lovers, and a living laboratory for his own learning.
