Pre-conference Tour 2018 Registration - Single (non-share)

Pre-conference Tour 2018 Registration - Single (non-share)
Tuesday 28th August – Saturday 1st September 2018
We will meet at accommodation (tbc) nearby Sydney airport on Monday evening 27th August and head to the Southern Highlands on the morning of Tuesday 28th August 2018.
DAY ONE – Tuesday 28th August
The Bradman museum at Bowral (, the Big Spud at Robertson (,_New_South_Wales) and the Waring family property with plantings dating over 65 years at Robertson will be highlights of Day One along with magnificent south coast native spotted gum forests and scenery. Overnight resort accommodation near Bateman’s Bay.

DAY TWO – Wednesday 29th August
Head from Bateman’s Bay and up the dramatic Clyde mountain to the very impressive Marshall family group of properties. Over 25+ years the Marshall’s have rejuvenated several dry, dusty and flood prone properties near Araluen (south of Braidwood) into green oases with strategic earthworks to slow down and retain water on site; a success story for the Peter Andrews approach to natural sequence farming and regenerative Landscape Management. Early pine plantings are ready for harvest, BUT their big game now is truffle production as one of the leading truffle growers in Australia.
We have another local property to visit (tbc) where managing for climate change will be discussed by an outstanding local farmer who has historic family climate records (temperature and rainfall) to demonstrate how the climate has changed and needs to be considered going forward. He has implemented natural sequence farming approaches since 1994 and the total profit per hectare per 100mm of rainfall in now more than 10 times the local average.
If time allows we will visit the outstanding Bungendore Woodworks Gallery as we head to Canberra. We will end day 2 at University House where we will be based for the rest of the trip and where the joint IFA/AFG conference will be held (2-5 September 2018)
DAY THREE – Thursday 30th August
We will start with a visit to John and Robyn Ive’s property, Talaheni. John brings an impressive range of experience from a distinguished CSIRO career to his farm. After nearly 40 years and adding 200,000 trees to the property with strategic regenerative land management, it is an excellent example of how to mix trees and livestock for high quality production and environmental outcomes. John produces very high quality merino wool. The Ive’s efforts since 1980 have been described as “By taking a strategic approach and working with the land and the seasons, John and Robyn have transformed an “environmental and farming basket-case” into an enterprise that has received local, national and international recognition”. They have received more than 27 awards for farming achievements.
We will also visit a nearby property (tbc) that is a contrast as the main game is revegetation for wood production.
Lunchtime will be a treat with antipasto platters and wine tasting at the fine local Murrumbateman winery.
We will then return to the Australian National University and visit their School of Art Fine Furniture workshop to take in both student and faculty art works as well as their facilities and timber collection.
DAYS FOUR & FIVE – Friday 31st August/Saturday 1st September
The plan is to take in a range of magnificent visit options around Canberra including: National Arboretum and National Bonsai Display, Canberra’s urban forestry scene and magnificently treed streetscapes and parks, the Australian Parliament house (a customised tour highlighting its unique featured timbers), Australian National Botanic Garden and the magnificent Bungendore Wood Works Gallery.
