WEBINAR | Seeds, Science and Resilience: Safeguarding Forests for the Future

Seeds hold the genetic diversity needed to help forests persist, adapt and recover in an era of climate pressure and increasing disturbance. The session explores the science and management practices that support seed conservation, seed banking, and the preservation of resources for future regeneration.

In this webinar, Owen Bassett will discuss seed supply for the effective management of native forests in Victoria, including what has been invested and achieved, and what the future may look like. David Bush will explore whether Australia has enough seed to conserve its forests, sharing findings from a recent study on seed reserves and the infrastructure needed to respond to climate change and other threats. Hagay Yavlovich will bring an international perspective, discussing seed collection and seedling production for afforestation in arid regions, with a focus on approaches, methods, and implementation in Israel.

Owen Bassett

B.For.Sci. (Melb.), MFA

Owen is a professional forester and the founding Director of Forest Solutions Pty Ltd, a private consultancy providing silviculture advice to organisations managing native eucalypt forests. Apart from growing a family, his special focus over a 38-year career has been threefold: (1) systems development for forest regeneration and building resilience; (2) the management of eucalypt seed for forest renewal; and (3) the restoration of forests following major bushfires in Victoria.

David Bush

BSc Forestry (ANU); PhD (ANU)

David Bush is Director of the CSIRO Australian Tree Seed Centre. He is a forest geneticist with research interests in the conservation, domestication and breeding of Australian tree species in Australia and overseas.

Hagay Yavlovich

M.Sc. (Agr)

Hagay Yavlovich is a professional forester specialising in seeds and nursery systems. He worked for 18 years at KKL-JNF, the Israeli Forestry Service, and currently serves as Director of the Seeds and Nursery Unit. He holds an M.Sc. in Plant Sciences (Forestry) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His work focuses on drought-resistant seed sources, nursery development, and improving seedling quality for forest restoration in Israel.
