Forest Valuation Standard

The purpose of the Australian Forest Valuation Standard is to provide a set of standards and guidelines for the physical and financial description and the valuation of commercial plantation and natural forests in Australia. They are applicable to plantation and natural forests of any size and ownership.

2010 Standard

The Australian Forest Valuation Standard A Standard for Valuing Commercial Forests in Australia – “AFVS” (2010) and associated Handbook (2012) were developed to provide professional and sectoral interpretation to the formal standards applied to forest valuations in Australia. The AFVS is an important guideline and plays a role in providing sectoral confidence in addressing issues associated with forestry valuations.

Authority

This Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Institute of Foresters of Australia (IFA) trading as Forestry Australia.  Forestry Australia is the professional association for forest scientists and forestry professionals in Australia. 2020 Valuation Standards | Exposure draft

Forest valuation methods continue to advance to meet the evolving disclosure requirements for reporting forest values. Increasingly advanced forest modelling systems enable valuers to incorporate real-world complexity and granularity into their forest representations.

The Forestry Australia Forest Valuation Sub-committee was convened in September 2016 to promote and manage updates to the Australian Forest Valuation Standard. In late 2017 an invitation was received from the NZ Forest Valuation Working Party to align on a joint ANZ standard. It is proposed that this Joint ANZ Standard, for the first time, will reflect best practice thinking for planted and natural forests in New Zealand and Australia.

In presenting this exposure draft of the joint Forestry Australia-New Zealand Institute of Forestry Valuation Standards, we acknowledge the support of Forests and Wood Products Australia (FWPA) and the substantial work and effort of the following:

  •  The NZIF Forest Valuation Working Party
  •  The Forestry Australia Forest Valuation Subcommittee and Working Group
