Reforestation in Action: Mine Rehabilitation and Plantations of the Blackbutt Range

The Forestry Australia Queensland Branch would like to invite members and friends to our next field trip.

About:

This reforestation-themed trip will highlight the role of forestry in mine rehabilitation, hardwood trials, and plantation establishment. We will begin with a visit to the Meandu Mine rehabilitation site, where participants will see how mined landscapes are restored through reforestation, land management practices, and current hardwood species trials.

In the afternoon, we will head to the Blackbutt Range, where new plantation establishment is underway. This visit will provide insights into modern silviculture, establishment techniques, and the contribution of plantations to sustainable timber production and resilient landscapes.

Meals: Morning and afternoon tea BYO, lunch at Yarraman/Blackbutt

Transport: Participants may carpool or self-drive to Meandu Mine. Please note that a minibus will be provided for the mine rehabilitation tour, as self-driving is not permitted on the mine site.

Equipment & Safety:

  • Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closed, sturdy boots (steel-caps and hi-vis recommended if available).
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle, and rain gear.
  • Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided on site.
  • A breath test is mandatory prior to entering the mine site.

Accessibility: The Meandu Mine rehabilitation tour involves travel by minibus and is not accessible for self-driving or those unable to board the bus. Walking on uneven ground will be required during the mine site and plantation visits, which may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

PROGRAM

9:30 am – Meet at Meandu Mine (visitor carpark). Welcome and site safety briefing.

9:45 am – 11:30 am – Tour of Meandu mine rehabilitation site, showcasing reforestation practices, hardwood trials, soil management, and long-term monitoring of restored landscapes.

11:30 am – 12:00 pm – Travel to Blackbutt/Yarraman.

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm – Lunch in Blackbutt or Yarraman (local cafés, pubs and bakeries available – participants to purchase their own lunch).

1:15 pm – 3:00 pm – Visit to the Blackbutt Range plantation establishment sites, with discussion on site preparation, planting techniques, species selection, and early silvicultural management.

3:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Wrap-up discussion and departure.
