WEBINAR | Australia’s State of the Forest Report

Australia’s State of the Forest Report is the key source of comprehensive information on Australia’s forests, including their management, use and conservation, and how they are changing. Australia’s State of the Forest Report is used extensively across industry, state, territory and Australian governments, research and education institutions, and for national and international reporting purposes.

The first Australia’s State of the Forest Report was released in 1998, with editions published five-yearly since then. Australia’s State of the Forests Report is now a web-based product via rolling updates based on the availability of new data.

Claire Howell and Shane Clohesy from the ABARES Forest Sciences team will present highlights from the most recent Australia’s State of the Forest Report update, covering topics such as forest area and forest area change, forest tenure, forest-dwelling species, area available for wood production, annual wood product removals, area of forest burnt, carbon in forest and forest products, and the Indigenous forest estate.

Claire Howell

Claire has had a lead role in the development and implementation of Australia’s national and international forest reporting processes for over 25 years. A forest scientist from the University of Melbourne, Claire manages Australia’s National Forest Inventory and led the review of Australia’s framework of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management. She contributed to all six of Australia’s State of the Forests Reports and represents Australia on the Montréal Process Working Group’s Technical Advisory Committee for temperate and boreal forests. Claire is also Australia’s National Correspondent for the UN FAO Global Forest Resources Assessments. With prior experience in the private sector and state government, she remains grounded with her ongoing family involvement in farm forestry and biodiversity corridors on a farm in northeast Victoria.

Shane Clohesy

Shane is a professional forester with 18 years operational experience in native forests and plantations across Australia. He has worked in a range of roles covering resource planning, operational planning, harvesting, plantation site establishment, native forest and plantation silviculture, and fire management.

Shane has been working with the ABARES Forest Sciences team for the last 12 months primarily on native forest production and carbon related topics, including the recent updates to Criterion 2 of Australia’s State of the Forest Report.

Shane currently resides with his young family at Broulee on the South Coast of New South Wales.
