Forestry Australia is an active professional association and community.
At any one time there are over 50 volunteers serving Forestry Australia as part of a committee, as a Director or on a project specific working group.
The benefits of volunteering with Forestry Australia include:

Volunteers can expect to participate in 4 – 5 committee meetings (face to face or via video conference) each year and on average spend two – three additional hours each month working in their areas of interest. In line with good governance principles we are seeking individuals with a variety of skills and experiences.

Expressions of Interest | Position Statements and Evidence Review Development
Forestry Australia is delighted to issue a Call for Expressions of Interest from members who are interested in developing key policy and advocacy outputs, including Position Statements and Evidence Reviews on behalf of Forestry Australia.
This Call is linked to Forestry Australia’s increased investment in Advocacy and Science Policy to amplify our voice for evidence-based decision making and produce high-quality resources that clarify our positions, empower our members and support effective communication with stakeholders, the public, and policymakers.
These initiatives are directly aligned with Forestry Australia’s strategic objectives and member priorities. They will be funded from our strategic reserves and will reflect member expertise and shape our collective voice.
Position Statements
Forestry Australia has released ten position statements over the past 18-months, these provide balanced, science-based perspectives on key forest policy and management issues for members, policymakers, and the broader forestry sector.

Evidence Reviews
Forestry Australia released its first Evidence Review on Deforestation last week. Evidence Reviews are a concise synthesis of current literature designed to make analysis of key issues clear, credible, and accessible to a broad audience. These reviews distil complex information into an easily understood format, supporting informed discussion and evidence-based decision-making.

The outputs that we are seeking Expressions of Interest on include:
Evidence reviews:
- Prescribed Burning
- Key threats to forests and biodiversity
- What are healthy and resilient forests
- Challenges of transitioning to entire plantation timber supply
- Leakage and substitution
- Plantations and native forests, features and functions
Position statements:
- Forest Health and biosecurity
- Urban forestry
- Connection to forests, human health and recreation
- Forest management and climate change
- First Nations Forest management
Members who are engaged to develop these Science Policy Outputs will be expected to consult with a range of subject matter experts and relevant stakeholders as part of the development. In addition, Forestry Australia’s Science Policy Officers Dr Michelle Freeman and Dr Lachie McCaw will provide briefings including the use of templates and ensure consistency in framing of these outputs.
Once outputs are complete, they are provided to Forestry Australia’s Board for review and approval.
An honorarium of $2,000 is available for the completion of each output

- The outputs that you are interested in developing
- The timeframe that you propose
- Dot points of your key thoughts about the issue and Forestry Australia’s position
- A one-page CV that is relevant to the output

Join the Editorial Working Group
From October 2025, The Forester and e-News will merge into a fresh, redesigned fortnightly digital publication – delivering the best of both formats with shorter, more frequent updates, curated research, member stories, advocacy news, events and more.
To help guide this exciting new publication, Forestry Australia is establishing an Editorial Working Group (EWG). The group will play a vital role in ensuring our e-Publication is high quality, relevant and engaging, while reflecting the values and diversity of our membership.
The Editorial Working Group will:
- Proofread & quality control – contribute via a rotating roster to review and proofread each edition before release.
- Editorial review & feedback – review member-contributed articles to ensure they meet editorial standards, are professional, factual and inclusive. Where needed, provide constructive feedback to contributors.
- Content development – actively encourage members to contribute articles and ideas, helping to generate topical, engaging and diverse content.
