Tammy Auld, BSc/ BForSc (Honours), MBA, GAICD: Commencing her career 25 years ago at ForestrySA, Tammy’s experience spans the government and private sector in softwood and hardwood plantation operations, Forest Management Systems and marketing. She supported forestry businesses as a consultant before joining Timberlands Pacific where she is the Regional Manager. Tammy is Chair of the South Australian Forest Products Association and Co-Chair of the Forest Industry Advisory Council for SA advocating for ongoing forest industry advancement.

Michael Bleby, OAM, BSc (For): Michael’s 40-year career spanned all aspects of forest operations, across the South East, Mid North and Mount Lofty Ranges. He was District Forester at Mount Crawford and Mount Burr during extensive replanting of the 1983 Ash Wednesday fire area. Subsequently he worked in Operations Development, Harvesting and Sales. He has lectured for Southern Cross University, served on the Natural Resources Board and is a writer of forestry memoirs.

Dr David Boomsma, BSc (For) Hons, PhD: Most of David’s early career was in the Woods and Forests Research Branch working on productivity improvements, herbicide applications, breeding and seed production for radiata pine. In 1980 he was Executive Officer of the Southern Tree Breeding Association during which most of the radiata pine owners in Australia combined to form a cooperative breeding programme. He later expanded the cooperative to include Eucalyptus globulus. In 2001 he formed seedEnergy Pty Ltd, initially to produce seed orchard seed for radiata pine and Tasmanian blue gum.

Pete Bulman, BSc (For), Fellow of Forestry Australia: After time in pine plantation management, Peter managed the Monarto Tree Planting Project. Later, he managed the Native Plant Section. His significant publications include Farm Revegetation Design, Farmtree$ for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Growing Broom Bush. Since 1993, he has promoted the profession via the Foresters Forest, a voluntary community-based urban forest in Adelaide. His business, Farm Tree Systems, provided a range of services, and he is still enjoying his tree farm, Bracken Ridge.

John Cox, Dip For (UK Forestry Commission). John emigrated to Australia in 1971 and worked in various harvesting roles with Woods and Forests from 1977 to 1980. He formed a cable logging contracting business from 1980-1984. He then worked as Logging Coordinator with Australian Newsprint Mills in Albury NSW until his retirement in 2004.

David Douglas, Dip Forest Tech (Advanced): David’s early career was with Woods and Forests in technical roles in mensuration, logging and plantation establishment. In the early 1970s, he joined the Logging Industry Training Team. With a JW Gottstein Fellowship, he travelled to Sweden to study forest training methods. He served on the initial Australian Standards for development of chainsaw standards and was a Chartered Professional member of the Safety Institute of Australia. Later, he formed a forestry industry OHSW consulting business.

Martyn England, BSc (For), Grad Dip Sci (For): Martyn’s early career was with the South Australian Department of Agriculture as the inaugural Landcare Officer for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island. This led to development roles in the farm forestry industry and subsequently to management of major, privately driven projects requiring multiple interactions across government. This multi-disciplinary team approach led to a leadership role for Immigration SA, Trade and Regional teams across SA Government agencies.

David Geddes, BSc (For): David’s early career was with Woods and Forests in management roles in silviculture, protection, harvesting and timber processing. He formed his forestry consulting business in early 1994, specialising in risk analyses, silviculture and valuations. He has worked on forestry projects in every plantation region of Australia, as well as in New Zealand, Guyana and Fiji. Based in Mount Gambier, South Australia, he has served on many forest industry boards.

David Hanna, BSc (For): David began his career as a forester with Woods and Forests. Later, he was appointed Research Manager at the Hardwood Irrigated Afforestation Trial, a government project at Bolivar, South Australia, investigating the reuse of effluent on irrigated native hardwood plantations. He has since established Redwyne Forestry, a forest management company based in the Mount Lofty Ranges that advises in forestry and related environmental disciplines.

Hugo Hopton, BSc (For): Initially working with Woods and Forests pine forest harvesting, operations and protection in the South East and Mount Lofty Ranges, Hugo then moved to managing the SA Government’s state-wide revegetation research and extension programs and nurseries. He led three Natural Resources Management Boards in engaging communities and industries in significant reforms, including water allocation and management. With Nature Foundation, he led the pioneering of pastoral zone carbon farming, environmental watering, connecting Aboriginal youth and country, community bushfire recovery and support of private native vegetation owners.

Troy Horn, BAppSci (Natural Resources Management): Troy is Conservation Manager at ForestrySA and has contributed in conservation-related roles for over 25 years. His main experience is botany, threatened species conservation, community plant and fire ecology and vegetation community mapping. He has worked on various strategic plans, projects and policy relating to native forest reserves in both the South East and Mount Lofty Ranges, including the Biodiversity Corridors Strategy and the Wetland Condition Field Guide.

Sandy Kanahs, Dip Leadership & Management: With a background in finance and administration, and a qualified trainer, Sandy has an in-depth understanding of the complexities and regulatory requirements of the Vocational Education and Training sector. Since being appointed CEO of LITA Training in 2019, she has worked on navigating compliance frameworks, fostering stakeholder relationships and driving continuous improvement in educational delivery and organisational performance.

Dr John Kellas, Dip. For. (Creswick), BSc (For.) (Hons), PhD, MSc., Grad. Dipl. Computing: John’s early career was in native forest management, plantation silviculture, forest pathology and agroforestry research. Later at the Centre for Forest Tree Technology, he managed research contracts of various government and commercial agencies. In 2001, he lectured in forest policy and silviculture at the School of Forestry and conducted several overseas aid projects in India. In 2004, he was appointed Executive Officer of the Green Triangle Regional Plantation Committee, based in Mount Gambier.

Diana Lloyd, B.For.Sci., MA, GAICD: After working in Victoria’s native forests around Orbost and Cann River, Diana transitioned to plantation forestry in Tallangatta. In 1996, she relocated to Mount Gambier, where she became the inaugural Executive Officer of the Green Triangle Regional Plantation Committee. She later served as the Mount Gambier Coordinator for Southern Cross University. Diana has also held board positions with ForestrySA and Australian Forest Growers.

Don McGuire, BSc (For): During his early forestry career, Don lived and worked on most of the government forest reserves across South Australia. He worked in forest management in various South East localities but spent most of his 35-year career in applied research with the Forest Research Branch in Mount Gambier and Kuitpo. Don was Principal Scientist Research with ForestrySA prior to his retirement.

Dr Tony McRae, B.Rur.Sc. (Hons), PhD. Tony is a quantitative geneticist. His background was in agriculture and he trained in animal genetics. He was a sugarcane breeder before joining the STBA as its geneticist in 1998 and moving to Mount Gambier. He was General Manager of STBA (2001-19) and, following its transition to Tree Breeding Australia in 2019, has continued as leader of the national breeding organisation.

Amy McMurren, BSc (For) (Hons), Grad Cert Timber Processing/Building. Amy began her forestry career with ForestrySA in 2003, focussing on farm forestry extension and species trial in the South East. She later worked on industry development in the Mount Lofty Ranges and on Kangaroo Island and contributed to several of Australia’s State of the Forests Reports. Now with PIRSA as Manager Forestry, Amy leads forestry policy and strategy to support the sustainable growth and development of forest industries.

Prof Jeff Morrell, BSc, MSc, PhD: Jeff is the inaugural Director of the Forestry Centre of Excellence at the University of South Australia. Prior to taking up this role, he served as the Director of the Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 2018 to 2023. Before his tenure in Australia, Professor Morrell dedicated over 35 years to leading the wood protection program at Oregon State University in the United States.

Andrew Moylan, Dip NRM: Andrew spent a decade with the Department of Recreation and Sport in the planning and establishment of the Heysen, Mawson, Investigator and other trails. He then worked with the National Parks and Wildlife Service as a Senior Ranger in Innes NP, followed by 21 years with ForestrySA, in various Manager and Coordinator roles involved in planning and implementation of conservation, revegetation, recreation, infrastructure, trails, volunteer, fire and prescribed burning programs and projects.

Dr Jim O’Hehir BSc (For) MFSc PhD: Jim has had a 40-year career in the plantation industry in the Green Triangle. His career has included roles in operations, planning and executive forest management. Since 2018 he has worked for the University of South Australia, helping to establish the Forestry Centre of Excellence. Jim has undertaken board roles including Chair of Tree Breeding Australia, and leadership roles with Forestry Australia. He received the 2023 Green Triangle Timber Industry “Timber Legend” award and is a Gottstein Fellow.

Lew Parsons, BSc (For): Lew is a Director of Wokurna Forestry, a forestry consulting company based in Mount Gambier which specialises in harvesting management, forest utilisation and marketing. Customers include harvesting contractors, forest owners and wood processors. Prior to 2006, Lew worked for ForestrySA, where he managed harvesting and marketing operations for 20 years.

Dick Passauer, BSc (For): Dick started with Commonwealth Hardwood Logging Research while studying at the University of Melbourne. After graduation, he continued in all areas of Woods and Forests improving efficiency of procedures and processes, particularly in sawmilling. After managerial roles in wood preservation and sawmilling, he spent over 20 years with TAFE working in forestry and timber education and industry training.

Dianne Patzel, BApplSc (For): Di has 15 years of plantation forestry experience in both the Green Triangle and Western Australia in various company roles. She is currently the silviculturist at the University of South Australia based at the Forestry Centre of Excellence, Mount Gambier. For the last five years, she has managed the Green Triangle Forest Health and Biosecurity Program on behalf of nine plantation growers, as well as supporting a range of other research projects.

David Quill, BSc (For): David began his career with Woods and Forests and then moved to Softwood Holdings. In 1998, David founded his forestry consulting firm, Eumeralla Pty Ltd, based in Mount Gambier. He has worked on projects in many parts of Australia, as well as in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Sweden and Chile, specialising in harvesting management, supply agreements and contractor agreements. He was General Manager of AUSTimber 2008 and AUSTimber 2012, the largest forestry expositions in the southern hemisphere.

Rob Robinson, BA, DipWPM, Grad Cert PSM: Rob is Director of Forest Industries with the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions and has worked in forest policy and industry development since 2006. Prior to this he worked with ForestrySA and National Parks and Wildlife in visitor and conservation management.

Mike Sutton BSc (For) (ANU), GradDipFor (ANU), MFES (Melb): Over a 40-year career, Mike has worked in both softwood plantations and native forestry for Woods and Forests in Mount Gambier, the Department of Sustainability and Environment in Victoria and since 2011 for the Forestry Corporation NSW, where he is currently Manager, Innovation and Research. He has a keen interest in technology, innovation and developing ways to use spatial, remote sensing and mobile data and systems to improve operational forest activities.

Mick Underdown, BSc (For). Mick’s forestry career was initially with Woods and Forests for 32 years from 1972, with roles in general forest management, nursery operations, Sirex control and Farm Forestry. This was followed by four years as Regional Manager of a blue gum management investment scheme company in the Green Triangle region.

Tony Wright, MEnt. Tony is the Executive General Manager of the Green Triangle Forest Industry Hub. He has extensive experience across forestry, energy and water sectors. Tony is an experienced director with several boards, including the Forestry Centre of Excellence.

Peter Zed, BSc (For) Hons. Peter started his career with Woods and Forests in research, prior to working in senior executive roles with Fiji Pine, Softwood Holdings, CSR Timber Products, Weyerhaeuser and ATP. In 2008, he established Omega Consulting, a business that works in the Australian and international forestry sector and focuses on forest and processing valuations, operational productivity, industrial restructuring and market development. He has worked on projects throughout Oceania, Asia, Africa and North America.
