WEBINAR | Forest Biomass: Bioenergy, Biochar and Beyond

This webinar will explore the opportunities and emerging applications of forest biomass in Australia.

Dr Fabiano Ximenes will focus on biomass for bioenergy, including the role of feedstocks, the opportunities and constraints of forest biomass, and the considerations shaping its use in Australia.

Melissa Rebbeck will present on Turning Waste Into Wealth: Pyrolysis Technology for Biochar, Energy and Carbon Removal Revenue. Her presentation will outline how pyrolysis technologies can transform low-value waste streams into high-value products, generating biochar, renewable thermal energy and certified carbon removal credits. Through case studies of scalable, continuous systems, she will demonstrate how forestry industries can convert residues into new revenue, stronger sustainability outcomes and long-term climate benefits.

Andrew Lang will discuss wood biomass and bioenergy, focusing on turning timber waste into electricity, fuels and other valuable products, and what this means for resource efficiency and future industry development. He will also provide case studies on the European approach to biomass.

Dr Fabiano Ximenes

Fabiano has worked in forest greenhouse gas accounting for more than 20 years, including life cycle assessment of wood products. He was one of the lead authors of the IPCC 2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol in the Harvested Wood Products chapter. More recently, his work has focused on biomass assessments and the potential use of forest biomass for bioenergy and other applications, with a strong emphasis on the practical considerations shaping its use in Australia.

Melissa Rebbeck

Melissa is a nationally recognised leader in biochar, carbon removal and sustainable land management, with more than 25 years of experience across agriculture, climate resilience, carbon markets and regional innovation. She is Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Biochar Industry Group and Business Development Lead at Metamorf Engineering. Melissa is known for connecting science, industry and policy to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions, and works across pyrolysis systems, biochar applications, commercial partnerships and the broader adoption of climate-positive technologies across regional and industrial sectors.

Andrew Lang

Andrew was a founding member of the SMARTimbers cooperative, which became one of Australia’s most innovative and successful farm forestry marketing cooperatives. He has used both Churchill and Gottstein Fellowships to study forest grower group management, income generation, and energy from woody biomass in Europe and the northern hemisphere. He became a founding board member of the World Bioenergy Association in 2008, and now acts as a senior consultant of the WBA. He manages about 130 hectares of dispersed farm forestry plantings for sawlogs, small roundwood products, carbon and biomass, with extensive practical experience in forestry, biomass and regional industry development
